John Keble [a] (25 April 1792 – 29 March 1866) was an English Anglican priest and poet who was one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Keble College, Oxford, is named after him. [1] Early life. Keble was born on 25 April 1792 in Fairford, Gloucestershire, where his father, also named John Keble, was vicar of Coln St. Aldwyns.

Ordained in 1816, Keble was educated at the University of Oxford and served as a tutor.

John Keble passed away quietly on 29 March 1866 in Bournemouth. He had only consented to be absent from his beloved parish as he thought sea air would be good for the health of his ailing wife. The village of Hursley was a sea of black on the day of his funeral, attended by many notable personages of the day.

2 de mar. de 2011 · John Keble (b. 1792–d. 1866) is remembered as one of the founding figures of the Oxford Movement (or Tractarianism). J. H. Newman credited Keble’s Assize Sermon of 1833, “National Apostasy,” as marking the start of the movement, though Keble himself denied this in later life.
