John Parke Custis (known as Jacky when younger, and Jack as he got older) was around four years old when his mother Martha married George Washington. Custis was one of the two surviving children of Martha Washington's first marriage to Daniel Parke Custis.
John Parke Custis died on November 5, 1781. He was buried at Eltham Plantation. After Jacky died, his widow agreed to let George and Martha Washington raise the two youngest of his children, George Washington Parke Custis (known as “Wash”) and Eleanor Parke Custis (known as “Nelly”).

After the death of his father, Daniel Parke Custis, his mother, Martha Dandridge Custis, married George Washington and moved the family to Mount Vernon. Washington became Custis’s guardian and the administrator of his large inheritance.
