He was also an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He was hugely influential in the last half of the 19th century, up to the First World War. Ruskin wrote on a wide range of subjects.

Rather than focusing on his insatiable pursuit of knowledge, or his influential ideas about art or social welfare, for many, what has stuck in the imagination is his infamously awkward (and unconsummated) wedding night.
