Primero, el primer duque se encaprichó de un amplio valle, luego se convirtió en un pedazo de pantano. Sir John Vanbrugh diseña y construye un gran puente con arcos y el puente principal con un ancho total 31 metros. Se inició la construcción en 1708, pero debido al costo fue demasiado alto, y no completó la construcción.

Nació en Londres, se educó en Cheshire y al ser apresado como militar por los franceses, comenzó a escribir.
