  1. John Welsh of Ayr. John Welsh ( c. 1570 –1622) was a Scottish Presbyterian leader. He was born in Dumfriesshire and attended the University of Edinburgh to obtain his MA in 1588. He became a minister in Selkirk and married Elizabeth Knox, a daughter of John and Margaret Knox, before leaving Selkirk. [2]

He was born in Dumfriesshire and, after a wayward youth, attended the University of Edinburgh and obtained his MA in 1588. He became a minister in Selkirk, and prior to 1596 and leaving Selkirk, Rev. Welsh married Elizabeth, a daughter of John Knox.

  3. From Kirkcudbright, John Welsh travelled northward to his third and last Scottish charge in the county-town of Ayr, with which town his name has ever after been associated. It was here that his preaching was most remarkably owned of God.

  4. His preaching resulted in his imprisonment on the orders of King James VI of Scotland, and in 1606 he was exiled to France, where he continued his activities for many years.
