Hartman fue un barítono intimista que atemperó la escuela del gran Billy Eckstine dedicándose por completo a la balada. Igualmente, Johnny Hartman figura como una de las grandes luminarias del jazz vocal y en el tramo final de su vida grabó con músicos que supieron captar la calidad de su talento interpretativo y, sensibilizados por su voz, le devolvieron sus virtudes.
