It was further damaged in 1769 during the Georgian-Russo-Turkish wars. Since 1994, the cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its original name is Akua, that's what Sukhum was called in ancient times. The fortress eventually lost its military-strategic importance and gradually fell into disrepair.
