The Grade I listed building Walpole House is the largest, finest, and most complicated of the grand houses on Chiswick Mall, a waterfront street in the oldest part of Chiswick. Both the front wrought-iron screen and gate, and the back boundary wall, are Grade II listed.
There have been few changes in Chiswick Mall since the First World War, apart from the rebuilding in 1936 of a hospital which had opened at Rothbury House and, c. 1968, the construction near by of town houses called Miller's Court on the site of a bakery close to the Hammersmith boundary.

The Glebe estate to its north was more upmarket. Chiswick station opened in 1849, followed by the now-lost Hammersmith and Chiswick station in 1857 and then Turnham Green and Gunnersbury stations in 1869. On Chiswick’s northern edge, Bedford Park set a new standard for suburban housing after 1875.
