It is described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as "the most important early-seventeenth century house in the county [of Leicestershire]". The name Hungarton is believed to have come from the Old English "Hungry tun" meaning Hungry town, it was called this because the quality of the soil in the area was so poor.
