  5. Born in Scotland, Franchitti attracted attention in 1992 when he was named McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year. He came to the U.S. in 1997 for Hogan Racing. The following year he won three races and a season-best five poles for what is now Andretti Autosport. In 1999, Franchitti lost the title to Juan Pablo Montoya based on a tiebreaker.
