A public university or public college is a university or college that is owned by the state or receives significant funding from a government. Whether a national university is considered public varies from one country (or region) to another, largely depending on the specific education landscape.
Updated on July 21, 2019. The term "public" indicates that the university's funding comes partly from state taxpayers. This is not true for private universities. It's also worth noting that many states do not fund their public universities adequately, and in some cases far less than half of the operating budget comes from the state.
