It is near the River Wiske in the Vale of Mowbray and had a population of 16,832 in 2011. Northallerton is an administrative centre for York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and North Yorkshire Council.

Northallerton is an affluent market town in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It lies in the Vale of Mowbray and at the northern end of the Vale of York, as is the heart of the Wapentake of Allertonshire. Northallerton had a population of 15,741 at the 2001 census.

Northallerton was a parliamentary borough in the North Riding of Yorkshire, represented by two Members of Parliament in the House of Commons briefly in the 13th century and again from 1640 to 1832, and by one member from 1832 until 1885 . The constituency consisted of the market town of Northallerton, the county town of the North Riding.
