Citations. Bibliography. Joseph Berchtold (6 March 1897 – 23 August 1962) was an early senior Nazi Party member and a co-founder of both the Sturmabteilung (SA) and Schutzstaffel (SS). Berchtold served in World War I and upon Germany's defeat joined the German Workers' Party (DAP), a small extremist organization at the time.

Joseph Berchtold, seltener Josef Berchtold, (* 6. März 1897 in Ingolstadt; † 23. August 1962 in Herrsching am Ammersee) war ein Aktivist der Nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP). In den 1920er Jahren bekleidete er im Umfeld Adolf Hitlers wechselnde höhere Funktionen in der Partei, in der SA und in der SS .

Joseph Berchtold, a former stationary salesman, succeeded Julius Schreck as Reichsführer SS in 1926. He was considered to be more dynamic than his predecessor, but was still unable to keep the Party organizers at bay. After much in-fighting he resigned in 1927 and was replaced by his deputy Erhard Heiden.
