This is due to his equal opportunities approach to choosing subjects and his decision to make every sitter equally fashionable, regardless of their status. Reynolds also worked to remove details from his compositions that would distract viewers.

In the late 1760s, Reynolds, as socially active as he was, organized a group of thirty-four painters to sign a petition for establishing the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
