Proche d’Adolphe Thiers, auquel il succède à la tête du parti Républicain en 1877, il aura toujours été fidèle à ce modèle politique, quand Thiers aura été partagé, lui, entre la monarchie parlementaire et la république.

He was a leader of the Moderate Republicans, and given that his predecessors were monarchists who tried without success to restore the French monarchy, Grévy is considered the first real republican president of France.

Jules Grévy's term as President (1879-87) confirmed the establishment of the Third Republic (1870-1940) in France. Grévy became an advocate in 1837 and was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1848. After the fall of the Empire, he was chosen as President of the Assembly in 1871, and occupied this position until 1873.
