  1. July 24, 1876: Julius Peter Heil, Wisconsin's 30th governor, was born on July 24, 1876 in Germany. He immigrated to Wisconsin in 1881 and settled in Milwaukee as a young man. In 1901, he established the Heil Rail Joint Company. Heil defeated Philip La Follette for governor in 1938, serving for two terms and losing in his bid for a third.

  6. In 1938 he was the successful Republican nominee for Governor. Heil held office for two terms, 1939 to 1943. Defeated in 1942, he returned to his position as Heil Company's Chairman of the Board. He died after suffering a heart attack while hunting.
