7 de may. de 2024 · Tuahiwi is a small rural village set amid green paddocks located between Rangiora and Kaiapoi, north of Christchurch. The area has a rich cultural history and Tuahiwi Marae has long provided a focus for not only Ngāi Tūāhuriri and the local community but for the whole of Ngāi Tahu. Ngāi Tūāhuriri
7 de may. de 2024 · Kaiapoi Pā. The town of Kaiapoi that lies to the north of Ōtautahi takes its name from the pā that was established in that area around the year 1700. This pā was to become the stronghold of the Ngāi Tahu tribe. Today the site appears as a green field covered in low mounds.
7 de may. de 2024 · In May 1840 Major Thomas Bunbury arrived on the HMS Herald to collect the signatures of the Ngāi Tahu chiefs for the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty had been signed by many North Island chiefs in the Bay of Islands earlier in the year on 6 February. During Bunbury’s visit only two of the Ngāi Tahu chiefs signed it.

The town developed in the 1850s on Kaiapoi Island, between the south and north branches of the Waimakariri River. Kaiapoi was a busy port in the 1860s. 11km north of the town is the site of the large Ngāi Tahu pā, Kaiapoi, built in the 1700s.
