Dr. Akagi, a physician in Japan during WWII, wages a one-man crusade against hepetitis, earning him a reputation. But his campaign brings him into disfavor with the Japanese army, and as the war seems more and more hopeless for the Japanese, Dr. Akagi finds himself increasingly used as a scapegoat.

Review by Sally Jane Black. The tone of this film seems to be like Red Beard meets Dr. Strangelove. It opens with a notably goofy pair of American pilots flying over and bombing Japan in a scene that has some pretty bad effects, but it then jumps into a lushly colored, melodramatic tale of a scientist and family doctor.
In Kanzo Sensei, Dr. Akagi struggles with the disease that exacts heavy tolls on the Japanese during wartime. There is the sense that the onset of the disease is almost karmatic; people should know to eat well and sleep well, but because of the country's involvement in the war are only allowed to do so when they are diagnosed with hepatitis.
