Kasturba was born in Porbandar in April 1869, a few months before Gandhiji and in the same town. Her father, Gokuldas Makanji, was a merchant and a friend of Gandhiji's father, Karamchand or 'Kaba' Gandhi. Both the parents decided to knit their families closer together by marrying their two children.

Baggrund. Mahatma Gandhi blev født i en købmandskaste med fromme hinduer og nonner. Han blev opdraget som vegetarianer og giftede sig 13 år gammel med Kasturba (omtales også som Kasturbai eller bare Ba), som han fik fire børn med. I 1888 forlod Gandhi sin familie og rejste til England for at studere retsvidenskab.
