King Moonracer is the ruler of the Island of Misfit Toys, featured in the Rankin/Bass Christmas television special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He is a mixture of a lion and a bird (similar to the mythical creature, the Griffin) who circles the Earth every night to find unloved toys in need of help.
Moonracer is first seen flying overhead as Rudolph, Hermey, and Yukon Cornelius make landfall on the Island of Misfit Toys. When they explain to him how they are misfits from Christmas Town and ask for sanctuary on the island, he says he can't do that because they aren't toys themselves, but he does ask for them to help the Misfit Toys. Wanting the toys to find good homes, he asks that if they do return to Christmas Town, they explain their situation to Santa Claus and convince him to stop by, pick up the toys, and deliver them on his annual run, explaining that a toy can never truly be happy until it has been loved by a child. When Rudolph promises they will indeed tell Santa everything when they return home, Moonracer grants them permission to spend the night on the island so they can return home in the morning, summoning his footman, the Spotted Elephant, to escort them to their quarters for the night.
In the direct-to-video sequel, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys, King Moonracer appears early on when Hermey, having now become a dentist as he really wanted to be, shows up to give him a root canal. Later in the movie, Rudolph and his friends return to the island to explain to Moonracer that the Toy Taker is likely going to abduct the island's new inhabitants next, and that Rudolph has come up with a plan on how they are going to catch him.
Despite the Misfit Toys' subplot being removed from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D attraction short, King Moonracer had a cameo, carrying the Spotted Elephant and the train with square wheels. Rudolph and Hermey notice him flying nearby and surmise that he's trying to find homes for the two Misfit Toys.
King Moonracer's most prominent appearance, however, was not in any actual animated film, but rather in the midquel graphic novel The Island of Misfit Toys, published in 2014 for the original special's 50th anniversary. The comic, which is primarily set shortly before the denouement of the special, follows Moonracer as he leads some of the Misfit Toys to rescue Charlie-in-the-Box after he is separated from the island when the Big Snow hits. Moonracer notably mentions early on in the story that he himself was considered a misfit in the town where he grew up, and when he left, he felt he was destined to help other misfits like himself. He also mentions that he has battled the Abominable Snowmonster of the North at least once before (prior to the beast's reforming).
