As for the “hdr” look - the irony is that Kodachrome didn’t have a huge latitude so the dynamic range is actually lower than negative films. Through careful composition and use of where the light was coming from, McCurry was able to frame his shots in a way that kept the scenes in a narrow band of exposure latitude making everything in the scene properly exposed.
