Nach dem Krieg versuchten die Nationalgalerie, deren Direktor jetzt wieder Ludwig Justi war, und die in West-Berlin neugegründete städtische Galerie des 20. Jahrhunderts, die entstandenen Lücken wieder zu schließen. Die 1968 eröffnete Neue Nationalgalerie knüpft ausdrücklich an die Tradition der Sammlung im Kronprinzenpalais an.
