From another line of Villiers, and with a reputation for being quite ugly, Elizabeth, aka “Squinting Betty, ” was nevertheless a shrewd, arrogant, ambitious woman. When I was first researching William & Mary, I thought Betty was the innocent target of William III’s attentions. How silly to think so!
