Joseph Addison (1 May 1672 – 17 May 1719) was an English essayist, poet, playwright, and politician. He was the eldest son of Lancelot Addison . His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend Richard Steele , with whom he founded The Spectator magazine.

Colonel John Addison, son of Lancelot Addison (1604-1703) and Dorothy (Danvers) Addison, was born in Westmoreland County, England, on the border of Scotland. He had three brothers. Thomas and Henry Addison were merchants; Anthony Addison was rector of Abingdon, Oxford, England, and Chaplain to the Duke of Marlborough.

Addison trabajó en Tánger como capellán durante siete años y, a su regreso, escribió "West Barbary, o una breve narración de las revoluciones de los reinos de Fez y Marruecos" (1671).
