Leland Hayward was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska on September 13, 1902. His father, Colonel William Hayward, was a well-known lawyer who would eventually become his son’s personal attorney. His parents divorced several years later, both remarrying. Hayward studied at Princeton University, but dropped out after his first year.
Leland Hayward was an American theatrical and film producer, talented agent, pilot, and airline executive. He produced the original Broadway stage productions of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific and The Sound of Music.
