Calinger, professor emeritus of history at the Catholic University of America, has a long prehistory: the author recalls that he was already planning to write a Euler biography as a university student, but was wisely advised not to embark on such an ambitious project at that point.
Euler was born in Basel to Paul Euler, a pastor of the Reformed Church, and Marguerite Brucker, a pastor's daughter.
