Hace 2 días · After World War II, a general strike forced King Leopold III to abdicate in 1951 in favour of his son, Prince Baudouin, since many Belgians thought he had collaborated with Germany during the war. The Belgian Congo gained independence in 1960 during the Congo Crisis ; [43] Ruanda-Urundi followed with its independence two years later.

Rather than being a key moment for abolitionism in Europe, it helped secure the 'Scramble for Africa'. Throughout the 19th century, the anti-slave trade movement was in full swing in Europe.
