Lester B. Pearson, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former prime minister of Canada, was the driving force behind the founding of Pearson College UWC. After retiring from public life, Pearson became interested in the United World Colleges movement.

He had been impressed by the United World College (UWC) project when he visited the Atlantic College in England.
