Lionel Hampton est un vibraphoniste, pianiste et batteur de jazz américain né le 20 avril 1908 à Louisville, et mort le 31 août 2002 à New York [1]. Surnommé « The lion », il a été le premier géant du jazz à donner ses lettres de noblesse au vibraphone en tant qu'instrument soliste.

Lionel Hampton was the first jazz vibraphonist and was one of the jazz giants beginning in the mid-'30s. He has achieved the difficult feat of being musically open-minded (even recording "Giant Steps") without changing his basic swing style. Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band as a youth.
