Wellesley retorted by taking control of Mysore, the Carnatic, Hyderabad, and Oudh, bringing native princes under British influence. He served as foreign secretary in Perceval's cabinet. Wellesley championed the rights of catholics in Ireland and in 1821–8 and 1833–4 acted as lord‐lieutenant of Ireland. In 1835 he became lord chamberlain.
After some years without holding public office, Wellesley was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1821 to 1828 and again from 1833 to 1834. He struggled to maintain order and moderation against the background of agitation both for and against Catholic emancipation, and was criticised by both sides. He retired from public life in 1835.
