Louis Félix Marie François Franchet d'Espèrey, petit-fils de François Franchet d'Esperey, est né à Mostaganem (Algérie), en 1856. Après avoir fait une partie de sa scolarité aux lycée Hoche et Sainte-Geneviève de Versailles, il sort de Saint-Cyr en 18762 et est affecté au 1er régiment de tirailleurs algériens.
