Le 20 février 1901, Louis Isidore Kahn naît à Kingisepp1, sur l’île d’Ösel (aujourd’hui appelée Saaremaa) en Estonie. En 1904, Léopold Kahn, le père de Louis Kahn, émigre aux États-Unis en raison du contexte politique, et y prépare l’arrivée de sa femme et de ses trois enfants, qui le rejoignent en 1906.
On February 12, 1969, Kahn gave a lecture at the School of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. Entitled Silence and Light, the lecture explains Kahns spiritual understanding of architecture, which goes far deeper than simply constructing buildings.
