Ce recueil rassemble le texte des conférences faites d'octobre 1961 à janvier 1965 en hommage à la mémoire de Mrs Louise Taft Semple, qui ne fut pas seulement de son vivant une généreuse bienfaitrice des études classiques à l'Université de Cincinnati mais qui institua une fondation pour que son œuvre de mécénat en leur faveur se poursuivit au-delà de sa mort, survenue le 27 mars 1961.
