Durante su expedición a Las Hibueras, Honduras, iniciada en 1524, Cortés cruzó la provincia de Acalan, donde encontró grandes poblados y dio muerte a Cuauhtémoc. Las investigaciones han permitido identificar a Itzamkanac, Capital de Acalan, con El Tigre, Campeche.
