House of Hanover, British royal house of German origin, descended from George Louis, elector of Hanover, who was crowned George I in 1714. He was succeeded by George II, George III, George IV, William IV, and Victoria. It was succeeded by the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed the house of Windsor in 1917.
