Marc Chagall was born Moishe/Marc Shagal in Liozne, near Vitebsk, in modern day Belarus, in 1887. He was a Russian-French-Jewish artist of international repute who, arguably, was one of the most influential modernist artists of the 20th Century, both as an early modernist, and as an important part of the Jewish artistic tradition.

Todas ellas tienen como referente común el mundo de su niñez y Chagall hace uso de ellas encastándolas con la arbitrariedad del ensueño y la nostalgia. En otras ocasiones, la apariencia ilógica de sus imágenes deriva de la simple transcripción al lenguaje visual de expresiones comunes del lenguaje hablado, que Chagall retoma y visualiza como forma de revelar experiencias psíquicas.
