Hace 4 días · Philip's first wife was his double first cousin, Maria Manuela, Princess of Portugal. She was a daughter of Philip's maternal uncle, John III of Portugal, and paternal aunt, Catherine of Austria. They were married at Salamanca on 12 November 1543. The marriage produced one son in 1545, after which Maria died four days later due to haemorrhage:
27 de abr. de 2024 · Just pointing out- Phillip II did have a child with his first wife; Maria Manuela of Portugal (his double first cousin)- Don Carlos, who eventually ended up being locked into his rooms by his father due to his mental instability. He died at the age of 23. Overall an interesting read though!

30 de abr. de 2024 · Joseph I died on Feb. 24, 1777, and Maria became Portugal's first ruling queen. Peter, her husband, was named king, but Maria had all of the royal power. Maria suffered mental maladies. The deaths of her husband (in 1786), oldest son (in 1788), and daughter (in 1788) exacerbated this; and in 1792, she was declared insane.
