Maria Walpole was one of five children born to Edward Walpole (son of the great British minister Robert Walpole) and his mistress Dorothy Clement, a shopgirl. When her mother died in 1739, Maria and her siblings were moved to their father's estate near Egham, where they were brought up like other aristocratic children despite their illegitimate birth.
