  5. At 18, Marsalis entered the Juilliard music school in New York and he also found employment playing in the pit orchestra for the Broadways show Sweeeney Todd and with the Brooklyn Philharmonia. In the summer of 1980 Marsalis accepted an offer from veteran jazz drummer Art Blakey to join his group, The Jazz Messengers, a band that served as school for promising young musicians.
