In Bildnis Frau Martha Dix (Portrait of Mrs. Martha Dix), whom Dix married in 1923, the artist emphasizes, for instance, not only her distinctive facial features, but also her avant-gardist haircut. The monochrome color scheme and the accentuation of the two-dimensional image surface support her seemingly iconic presence as does the concomitant exaggeration and simultaneous reduction of details.

Martha Dix fue una orfebre y platera alemana y esposa del pintor Otto Dix, quien la retrató muchas veces entre 1921 y 1933. Un conocido retrato doble de la pareja también se puede encontrar en el portafolio de August Sander, People of the 20th Century de 1925.
Martha, who wears a bob hairstyle, typical of the 1920s, also appears emotionless, but looks directly at the viewer. This kind of double portrait seems influenced by the austerity and realism of the New Objectivity portraits. The way that Otto Dix is portrayed also recalls some of his self-portraits.
In the Footsteps of an Artist Family. At the Museum Haus Dix visitors can experience the everyday life of an artist family in the postwar period. Here, in the former studio and residential house overlooking Lake Constance lived the artist Otto Dix, together with his wife, Martha, and their three children from 1936 until his death, in 1969.
