I did have the same reaction to Mary Astor as Brigid O'Shawnessy on my first watch through. The chemistry and dialogue between Sam and his 'girl Friday' seemed more authentic. On subsequent viewings (when you can focus more on the acting and the delivery instead of just trying to follow the plot) I've come to really see that there's more going on between Brigid and Sam.
