James Mayer de Rothschild was the youngest child of Mayer Amschel Rothschild. He was born in the house of the Grünes Schild in the Judengasse in Frankfurt on 15 August 1792. Six years later his brother Nathan left Frankfurt to further the family business which James himself was eventually to lead after Nathan's death.

Mayer Amschel Rothschild [l'orthographe initiale Meyer Anschel ( אנשל ), étant germanisée en Mayer Amschel] (23 février 1744 à Francfort-sur-le-Main – 19 septembre 1812 à Francfort) est un financier, fondateur de la dynastie banquière des Rothschild, devenue l'une des familles les plus célèbres du monde des affaires.
The founder of this world-famous banking firm was Mayer Amschel Rothschild, who was born in Frankfort 214 years ago, in a very religious family, several members of which were rabbis. His father Amschel Moses Rothschild, who died a year after Mayer Amschel became Bar Mitzvah, had hoped that his son would be a rabbi.
On the death of Mayer Amschel Rothschild 1812, his eldest son, Amschel Mayer (1773-1855), took over the management the Frankfurt House. Amschel died childless, and the son of his brother Salomon, Anselm (1803-1874), and the sons of his brother Carl, Mayer Carl (1820-1866) and Wilhelm Carl (1828-1901) assumed responsibility for the business from 1855.
