Mervyn LeRoy was an American film director, producer, and sometime actor. LeRoy worked in costumes, processing labs and as a camera assistant until he became a gag writer and actor in silent films, including The Ten Commandments in 1923. LeRoy continued to take on challenges into the decade of the '50s, successfully bringing the chilling play The Bad Seed to the screen in 1955 with most of its Broadway cast intact. LeRoy remained busy into '60s -- his last major film was the screen adaptation of Gypsy, starring Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, and Karl Malden.
