Morgan in 2013. Michael DeVard Morgan (September 17, 1957 – August 20, 2021) was an American conductor. He was music director of the Oakland East Bay Symphony for 30 years. He was also music director of the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and artistic director of Festival Opera in Walnut Creek, California .

Michael Morgan, Music Director and Conductor of Oakland Symphony since 1991, died peacefully on August 20, 2021 at Oakland Kaiser where he had been admitted for an infection. He was 63. In May of 2021, Michael Morgan underwent successful kidney transplant surgery at UCSF.
