Michael Earl Smith (born August 10, 1965) is an American jockey who has been one of the leading riders in U.S. Thoroughbred racing since the early 1990s, was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2003 and has won the most Breeders' Cup races of any jockey with 27 victories.

  2. After learning to ride at the bush tracks at the age of 11, Smith took out a license at age 16. Smith rose to stardom in the 1990s, winning the first of his record 27 Breeders’ Cup races in 1992, and winning the Eclipse Award in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, Smith set a North American record with 62 stakes victories.

Shortly after launching his licensed career in 1982 at age 16, he won his first race with Forever Man at Santa Fe in New Mexico. Suffered major injuries in two separate spills in 1998.
