He made his movie debut in the comedy "Ben's Kid" (1909) and soon appeared in shorts like "Making It Pheasant for Him" (1909), "The Sanitarium" (1910) and "A Voice from the Deep" (1912).

He weighed in excess of 13 pounds (5.9 kg) at birth and his father believed that he was illegitimate, as both parents had slim builds.
