The first film adaptation, Henry Koster 's My Cousin Rachel starring Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland, was released in 1952. Du Maurier and original director George Cukor reviewed a screenplay draft and found it unfaithful to the novel, with du Maurier declaring it "Quite desperate." [2]

Based on a Daphne du Maurier novel and destined to be forever upstaged by that other du Maurier adaptation, Rebecca (1940), the film stars Richard Burton in his first U.S. film as Philip Ashley, a wealthy, orphaned boy raised in Cornwall by his cousin Ambrose (John Sutton).
In his U.S. film debut, Burton plays Philip Ashley, whose wealthy cousin Ambrose leaves his estate to him rather than Ambrose's own wife Rachel. Ashley finds himself falling for Rachel, even as he suspects her of murdering her husband and using Ashley to get the fortune she was denied.
