William Hume, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and a Presbyterian minister by trade who arrived in Nashville in 1802, was appointed president of the Academy in 1820.

During the Civil War in 1862, the school closed temporarily so that it could function as a hospital by both Confederate and Union Soldiers.
