Nell Gwynn was one of the first ever English actresses. Before she joined the King’s Players in the 1660s, all parts in plays – even female ones – were performed by men. And middle-class men at that. Nell acted at the Drury Lane theatre in Covent Garden while still a teenager. She used the stage name ‘Madame Ellen’.

25 de feb. de 2021 · Nell Gwyn’s house, re-identified in 1904 by historians. In March of 1687 Nell suffered a stroke – possibly as a result of syphilis, though there’s no direct evidence of this. She was left paralysed down one side, and remained ill until her death in November.
