This reduces poor Watson to little more than comedy relief, much to the irritation of purists who know that in the books he is an intelligent and complicated character in his own right.

  4. Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes is much more empathetic, reasonable, and socially adept than the character in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. And Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson is a bumbling clown, whereas in the stories the good doctor was quite intelligent and resourceful in his own way, as well as brave and good with a gun when necessary.
